Hanbing Fang

Hanbing Fang (ICE) is a London-based visual artist working with computer-generated imagery, programming, and photography to explore themes of posthuman identity, immersive technology, and the blurred boundaries between reality and virtuality. Influenced by postmodern philosophy and posthuman theory, her practice interrogates how digital culture shapes self-perception and embodiment. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the London Design Festival and the Shanghai Biennale, as well as in exhibitions in Beijing and Hangzhou.

Cheesetrap (collective)

Cheese Trap Art & Technology Lab was established in Hangzhou in 2023 by a team of artists, designers and programmers with interdisciplinary backgrounds from the China Academy of Art. Their practice encompasses data generation, spatial augmented reality, human-computer interaction, media experimentation, digital performance and new media art installations, consistently exploring themes of ecology and society, reality and virtuality, and the international versus the regional.
Their works have been exhibited at institutions including the Power Station of Art, Zhejiang Exhibition Centre, Beijing Times Art Museum, Suzhou Museum, Zhejiang Art Museum and China International Design Museum.

Information

Echoes in the Shell brings together multiple works that collectively envision the emotional, cultural, and existential states of future lifeforms shaped by technology. When consciousness, indeed life itself, dwells within the “shells” of non-natural organisms, where does the essential foundation of human selfhood reside? These works trace the fragile boundaries between memory and simulation, intimacy and algorithm, disappearance and preservation. Together, they construct a speculative world in which future beings strive to comprehend existence, mortality, and sensation, which ultimately leaves echoes within the space where virtuality and reality converge. The “shell” carries a dual meaning, referencing both the synthetic bodies that future lifeforms may inhabit and the philosophical lineage of Ghost in the Shell, in which identity resonates through and beyond its technological vessel.

Overview of Works
The exhibition includes a total of six works. The participating artists are Hanbing Fang (ICE) and Cheesetrap (collective).
The works span media such as photography, CGI, and AI, and they are presented through various formats including interactive installations, screens, projections, and printings.
