The early 1970s saw a revival in local street festivals and the squatters at Fieldgate Mansions in Whitechapel put on their own Fieldgate Festival with a scratch band of musical instrument makers and musicians in the courtyard. Scheduled for demolition in 1972 it was squatted by homeless people, artists & Bengali immigrants preventing destruction until taken over by a community housing trust in 1980 & modernised in the late ‘80s.
