Up to 600 homeless men and women sleep on old mattresses spread out on the floor each night at the Crisis at Christmas charity shelter for homeless in St Philip and St Augustine’s disused church in New Road, Whitechapel 1978. As many hostels close over the Christmas period Crisis set up shelters in disused churches, feeding and caring for homeless people over the holiday.
