Jason McGlade
Jason McGlade is a photographer and creative director well known for his eclectic style and his unusual approach to fashion and advertising photography. He studied Documentary Photography at Newport University South Wales and Oliviero Toscani’s acclaimed Creative lab Fabrica in Treviso, Italy. He created several advertising campaigns for fashion clients such as Etro and Diesel and has been published all over the world in cutting-edge publications.
His editorial work inspired him to create his own magazine – Freestyle Magazine. The four issues of the round magazine that fit inside a frisbee were published in collaboration with designers including Eley Kishimoto, Paul Smith and Matthew Williamson and have become much sought-after design objects.
As a photographer, McGlade predominantly shoots analogue. Spending plenty of time in his own darkroom, he explores photographic techniques, experiments with out-dated lm and integrates handmade elements. The artistic as well as the practical process of image making are key to his practice.

The rare beauty of Dead Flowers // New Faces began in the shed Jason McGlade constructed in London several years before lockdown. Looking out through found glass windows, McGlade needed a studio extension for his connoisseur’s collection of vintage cameras, analogue development, a stuffed fox, and flowers rummaged from bins at Covent Garden Market, used as frames for shoots, then hung upside down to dry.
The shed became a poetic bridge between Jason’s past life of shooting new faces for modelling agencies, finding creative exorcism from the death and illness that had plagued him, until beginning this project.It was when he found an old box of Polaroid, and asked himself what he was gonna do with the last box – the last box ever to be made, that a mirror began
to Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Experience. Skip-dipping from the great scrapheap in the sky to fresh purpose, taking the light of a moment never to be repeated. Like any of McGlade’s projects, Dead Flowers // New Faces is unique, expanding to new worlds with a root in classicism (his commercial work appeared in Vogue Italia, walking the coastline of Albania, Greece, Montenegro and around to Italy became the Walking the Dog (Hatje Cantz Verlag).
Working deeper in Berlin, photographing creatives and time-lapsing fresh flowers to their demise from a studio in Moabit, the project’s craft expanded, hand-painting prints, preserving dead-stock’s beauty with large format techniques otherwise left in the 20th century, passed on methods, coincidental collisions, laying into a spectrum of materials (from hand-made paper to concrete), negatives over positives, rephotographing, chasing serendipity, through the magic of mistakes that the digital world seldom allows.
