In anthropology LIMINALITY from the Latin word ‘līmen’ means “a threshold”: the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of rituals.

During a ritual’s liminal stage, participants “stand at the threshold” between their previous way of structuring their identity, time, or community and a new way, which the ritual establishes.

The anthropologist Victor Turner in his seminal work on anthropology and performance talks about the liminal as a ‘marginalised’ space of possibility, of potential forms, structures, conjectures, and desires – ‘fructile chaos’ ‘a striving after new forms … a gestation process.’

In our use of the term LIMINALITY we are exploring – ‘art that can be described as being located at the edge of what is possible’

LIMINALITY presents new works by artists that intentionally ‘cross-over’ into multi-disciplinary areas of production, mixing, moving through sound / visual performance. Their aim is to tear open new ideas; new avenues of LIMINALITY like the ritualistic shaman throwing themselves into bouts of the unknown either through softly spoken transcendent states or spat through a daemonic mouth into a primordial moment a primordial experience.
